The Phoenix Chess Club, just as the mythical phoenix bird,
continually revitalizes and regenerates itself. The club has a long and rich
history in the annals of Johannesburg and Gauteng Chess and has won the club
league on countless occasions. It has been represented, at various times, by
most of the countries top players.
Amongst these, to mention a few, count such luminaries as Mark Rubery, David Gluckman, Daniel Cawdery, Gordon Meyer, Daniel Zang, Frank Korestensky and this year even a guest appearance by Robert Gwaze, the African champion.
In 2008 the club settled into it's new headquarters in Kensington and managed to field 2 teams, of largely "unknown" players, with the exception of Nicholas van der Nat, in the Gauteng Premier League. Nevertheless both teams performed very well with the A side finishing 3rd and the B side ending 5th ahead of all the other B sides and also such teams as Randburg A and Kempton A.
The club meets on Thursday evenings at 19h30 and welcomes new members, as well as guests. Please use the menu above for contact details, program/tournaments and directions.
* The phoenix is a mythical female bird with a tail of beautiful gold and red plumage. It has a 1,000 year life-cycle, and near the end the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix is destined to live, usually, as long as the old one.
