Some African Teams participation at Olympiad still in doubt!
The ongoing saga regarding the participation of the Ethiopian, Nigerian and Ugandan teams at the Dresden Olympiad, has still not been resolved with less than 4 days to go before the opening ceremony.
The initial issue of overdue FIDE membership fees seems to have been resolved for now, with federations promising to pay. However, the Ugandan team is desperately trying to raise the necessary funding with a substantial amount still to be found. More on The Chess Drum.
The Ethiopian team is experiencing problems in obtaining the necessary visa's from the German Embassy. Full story on The Chess Drum.
The Nigerian team is struggling with funding, as well as visa problems.
It is certainly not looking good for the participation of these 3 countries at the Olympiad, especially considering the time left, which will be a great pity.
This situation surely is not conducive to the players performing optimally and even though none of the African countries are serious medal contenders it is necessary for the advancement of Chess on the continent that the best performances possible are given!
