Rules for the Tournament

 

1.            Format

 

The Championship will be run as a Swiss Event.

 

2.            Who may enter

 

Clubs affiliated to a provincial region recognised by Chessa.

 

3.            Team composition

 

3.1           Teams will consist of 5 players, i.e. 4 playing players (4 boards) and 1 reserve.

3.2           Teams are not obliged to include a reserve player.

3.3           Players must play in the board order as indicated on the entry form.  If it is found that a team has “shuffled” their board order, the team involved will lose that match and score zero (“0”) points.

3.4           The reserve player (if used) may only play on the bottom board (4th board).  All other affected players will shift up one board.

3.5           Reserve players may only play for one team.  E.g. a player cannot be reserve for the A-team and be board 1 for the B-team.

3.6           Average team ratings will be calculated by averaging the ratings of a team’s first 4 boards (excluding the reserve player).

3.7           In order to qualify for a board prize, a player must play at least 4 games.

 

4.            Determining the Winners

 

The club scoring the most number of game points (aggregate of the scores on the four boards) after seven rounds is the winner.

 

5.            Tie-breaks

 

In the event of a tie for any position (including 1st position), the tie between teams with the same scores will be broken as follows (in order):

 

(a)       Match points

(b)       Direct encounter (the results between the tying teams)

(c)        Sonneborn-Berger

 

6.            Board Prizes

 

The player with the highest percentage score on a specific board wins the board prize.  A tie between players (that have played at least 4 games on a specific board) and scoring similar percentages will be broken as follows (in order):

         

(a)       Number of games played on that board

(b)       Direct encounter (if applicable)

(c)        Toss of a coin

 

7.            Time Control

 

60/60 (60 minutes per player to complete the game).

 

8.            Registration

 

Registration fees for teams will be R300 per team. Fees to be paid into account number 070157359, Standard Bank, cheque account, branch code 020009, Account name: Chess Western Province. 9.            Date & Venue

 

Date:         Friday, 28 November 2008 – Sunday, 30 November 2008

               

Venue:       University of the Western Cape Stadium, UWC, Bellville.

 

10.      Prizes

 

Will be based on the number of teams entered and a list of these will be made available at the captain’s meeting prior to the commencement of the tournament.

11.      General Rules

 

a.    Because this will be a CHESSA rated event, ALL participants MUST be registered with CHESSA for 2008.  Proof to be submitted during registration.

b.    Entry fees to be paid beforehand into the bank account.

c.     FIDE Laws of Chess ( latest edition ) subject to these rules to apply.

d.    Board prizes.  A player will only qualify for the board prize as indicated on the team’s entry form.  E.g. If a player is registered to play board 3, and he/she plays more games on a different board (e.g. board 2), then he/she will only qualify for the board 3 prize.

e.    Teams must supply 2 clocks.  All clocks must be in good working order.
